Astrology, Thought-Forms, and Mercury Retrograde

Hello friends,

This most recent Mercury retrograde period has been a real doozie for me. Fortunately it will be over tomorrow and then we just have a 2 week post retro period. I just haven’t been in the right space to write anything that felt genuine until today. Everything I’ve posted recently was written before Mercury Rx began.

This is a good opportunity to talk a little bit about how astrology fits into the thought-form model that I so often speak about. If you have been following me you may have noticed a thread throughout my writing. My entire model of existence is based on the idea that everything in creation is made of consciousness. There is only one divine and infinite consciousness and everything that exists, exists within that divine mind. Astrology can be a way to see what the universe is thinking/intending in relation to you, other people, events, places, and even objects. You can draw a chart for literally anything and gain insightful information about that thing, all you need is the exact time of creation for the thing you want to know about.

In my many years as an astrologer I have always felt that most astrologers will only give you very vague answers about how to read a retrograde planet. Now that I have established the idea of how thought forms work in my previous posts, explaining retrograde planets from this perspective is easy.

As you likely know by now if you have been keeping up with my posts, thought forms need energy so they may perpetuate the patterns and beliefs that sustain them. When a planet goes retrograde you could say that the thought-forms that are most closely related to that planet start to get hungry and come out to feed. This is why it is so common for people to experience problems during retrograde periods but this is also a good opportunity to significantly reduce the strength of that thought-form.

For example, when using the placidus house system, I have Gemini sitting in my 10th house and it spills over into my 9th house as well. Since Mercury rules Gemini, Mercury retrogrades tend to affect both my work life (10th house) and my over all big-picture of how the world works (9th house stuff).

I also have Chiron in the part of Gemini that sits in my 9th house. Chiron represents a person deepest wounds and mine came from growing up in an environment that actively tried to confuse my perception of reality. So now whenever Mercury is retrograde I have an existential break down and begin to doubt everything I know to be true. My work life begins to suffer and at the same time I am overcome with crippling doubt about my own ability to perceive life correctly. You can imagine that writing about magick for my patrons would be difficult in such a situation.

Fortunately, after wrestling with this particularly nasty aspect of my subconscious for the last few weeks, I am feeling myself again and can continue my work. Being armed with the knowledge of how these retrogrades effect me gives me the ability suspend my belief in what my mind is trying to tell me, at least to a certain extent. While these retrogrades are often no fun to deal with, they are opportunities to create real change. The kind of change that goes much deeper than surface level changes.

Much of life shows up as different faces and different places, but in the end its the same old thing. When you successfully drain a thought-form that affects your core beliefs about reality, you are able to put life long patterns to an end once and for all. The difficulty is that these core beliefs/thought-forms are old and have been happily feeding on your emotions for your entire life so they have quite a bit of power and momentum built up behind them. It can take more than one retrograde cycle to fully put them to rest. Of course, this will vary from person to person depending on the specifics of your early life.

The lesson I learned these last few weeks is difficult to articulate but I will do my best. I found an old piece of writing that i never posted and it talked about the idea that one of the most important questions a person can ask themselves is “How does reality really work and what is my place in all this?”. Little did I realize that asking this question is exactly what can keep a person from finding the answer. Obsessively thinking about the true nature of reality will only create a wall of thoughts which will obscure your view of the present. When the mind is quiet, the nature of things becomes obvious, you just feel and know the truth as if you’d known it all along but somehow forgot.

The thing that wants to solve the problem is, in itself, the problem. Quite a conundrum right? The mind cannot reconcile this paradox so it will spin its wheels by creating self doubt and fool you into believing that you will ‘figure it all out’ if you think about it long enough. If you try to solve the mysteries of life the same way you would solve a math problem, you will simply come up with more and more abstractions that take you farther and farther away from the present moment.

In the coming months as Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus enter their retrograde periods, keep this idea in mind. If you know how to read your own natal chart and have a tarot deck to back up your discoveries, you can use divination to find out which of your thought-forms will be surfacing and trying to fool you into repeating the lessons of the past. The influence of outer planets tend to be much more subtle than the inner planets and can be more difficult to spot. It can also be tough to remain objective when looking at issues that hit so close to home.

If you would like some assistance in discerning certain situations in your life or want to know more about your natal chart, or want to discuss anything, there are two ways I can help.
